Notes on
the Superiority of Jesus as Priest
The author is stressing the superiority of
Jesus as a priest over the Levite priests. The
author of this letter was writing to a Jewish
audience and wanted to convinve them that Jesus
was clearly and unarguable supirior to their
priests
Hebrews 7:24 But
this man, because he continueth ever, hath an
unchangeable priesthood.
- Jesus is our eternal priest because he is
not subject to death,
Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore
he is able also to save them to the uttermost
that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth
to make intercession for them.
- Jesus saves us because both his atoning
sacrifice and he himself is eternal.
Hebrews 7:26 For
such an high priest became us, who is holy,
harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and
made higher than the heavens;
- The high priest Jesus is without sin.
Hebrews 7:27 Who
needeth not daily, as those high priests, to
offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and
then for the people's: for this he did once, when
he offered up himself.
- Jesus did not need to repeat his
sacrifice since he was without sin and
had no sin for which he had to atone.
Being perfect his sacrifice atoned for
all at the point in which the sacrifice
of himself was made. Being a perfect
sacrifice it never needs to be repeated.
Hebrews 7:28 For the
law maketh men high priests which have infirmity;
but the word of the oath, which was since the
law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for
evermore.
- The law made men who are weak priests but
after the law the son of God is
consecrated as the eternal priest by the
oath of God.
