Notes on a Sabbath Day's Journey

In Christ's time on earth there were a system of man's ordinances were instituted by the Jews to regulate God's law. Since work was forbidden on the Sabbath a rule was made as to how far one may travel on the Sabbath day. The distance was a short walk, the NIV Study Bible estimates about three quarters of a mile. That the Sabbath was a day of rest was God's law, that man may walk no further than ¾ of a mile is of man.
