Notes on Melchizedek

In Genesis 14:18 - 20 we are introduced to Melchizedek king of Salem. Melchizedek was a priest of God who blessed Abraham and received tithe from him. From this we get the Order of Melchizedek. This priesthood is a legitimate priesthood completely separate from the Aaronic or Levitical priesthood. This is important because the Jews expected the Messiah to be both of the tribe of Judah and a priest. Since their priests were of the tribe of Levi there had to be a way for Jesus Christ to be both a priest and a Jew. The priesthood in the Order of Melchizedek allowed Jesus to be both.

15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)
