Notes on Victuals

In Matthew 14:15 the word "victuals" is a less than perfect translation of the Greek word "broma". Victuals means food but broma means food particularly that which would be deemed "unclean" or "unlawful" by a Jew trying to live under late old testament law. So when Jesus decided to feed the hungry it was in part to assuage their hunger and also in part to protect them food that they would see as unclean.
