Notes on Righteousness

It is not enough to be righteous one must be righteous in the eyes of God. The Pharisees were offended because Jesus did not hold to their tradition but Jesus tells us in Matthew 15:13, "Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up." Without the righteous in the eyes of God we face eternal damnation.

The tradition of the elders that the Pharisees adhered to was false righteous based on societal tradition in the culture. It is easy to see the fault of Pharisees but we often miss it in our own Churches. Some Churches forbid TV watching or women working outside the home, moderate drinking, dancing and so on. Some even in my own denomination suggests that Wagner's Wedding March is inherently evil. See LCMS FAQs--Bridal March. A respect for cultural tradition is fine but the things of man must never be placed on par with the things of God.
