Notes on "Coat"
The word "Coat" is translated from
the Greek word Chiton a tunic, an undergarment,
usually worn next to the skin, a garment, a
vestment." Chiton
- KJV Greek Lexicon
Usually I like the KJV translation in that
although a little old fashioned it is usually
richer. However Coat instead of Tunic is one of
the times it falls short. The garment they mean
is a sleeved garment that opens in the front and
hangs dress-like to the knees. It was usually
worn with a belt or girdle. It is likely that the
Camelhair garment that John
the Baptist is described in Mark 1:6 was a tunic.
