Notes on Matthew

For most of 2000 years it was accepted that Matthew wrote the book of Matthew. Relatively recently it has been postulated that Matthew was not the author since there is a great deal in common with Mark and then Luke. To this point I find the arguments less than compelling. Until there is clear and compelling evidence to the contrary I am satisfied with the attribution to Matthew.

Mathew was the brother of James and Mathew was also known as Levi the son of Alphaeus. He was a tax collector who was called to be a disciple of Jesus.

Matthew is from the Greek, Mattaios meaning "gift of Jehovah". Matthaios - KJV Greek Lexicon
