Notes on the Golden Rule

In Matthew 7:12 we are given the great commandment of Jesus Christ. The Golden Rule as we often call it is the idea that we must do to others as we wish them to do to us. While not a completely new idea since similar ideas were mentioned in earlier Rabbinical writing Jesus made it the lynchpin of his teaching. We see variations of this message in Luke 6:31, Romans 13:8, and Galatians 5:14.

We show our love through the Golden Rule but we are cautioned our love must be;

"love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned." 1 Timothy 1:5
