Darkness from a number of
related Greek words; Skotia, Skotos,
Skoteinos, from the Greek root word Skia
The absence of light.
In Matthew 4:16
darkness (from the Greek Skotia) is used
as a metaphor for separation from God.
In Mathew 6:22 - 23
darkness (from the Greek Skoteinos) is a
metaphor for complete separation from
God.

6:22 The lamp of the body is the eye:
if therefore thine eye be single,
thy whole body shall be full of light.
6:23 But if thine eye be evil, thy
whole body shall be full of darkness.
If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how
great is the darkness!
