Notes on the genealogy of Jesus Christ

The book of Mathew opens with the geneology of Jesus through his mother Mary through David and back to Abraham. Why of all the things one could say of JesusGod and Man on earth why the geneology first? It was not to impress us with famous realitives it was to tell us that this man was the Messiah, the promised one, fulfilling the prophecies of the old testament. Matthew shows us that Jesus is is the Messiah. He does this by opening with the proof that God has given us that us.

One of the key Messianic Prophesies is that Jesus will be of the House of David. We see it predicted in Isaiah 11:1 and Jeremiah 23: 5. Mathew goes to great pains to demonstrate the lineage of Jesus to show he was of the House of David, a shoot of the stump of Jesse, a righteous Branch and the answer to prophecy.
